Wellington School

The School aims to inspire pupils to a life-long interest in learning, achieved by subject-specialist teachers harnessing modern techniques across the full range of traditional subjects, together with an emphasis on monitoring by personal tutors. On average over 40% of pupils achieve A*/A at A Level, regularly making it the top-performing school in Somerset. Recent additions to the facilities include the Carla Loggan Language Centre and the John Kendall-Carpentier Science Centre.

The boarding community is central to Wellington School’s rich and diverse environment. Partnerships between home and school and student and teacher are bridged by the 5 boarding houses, where pastoral care is delivered by live-in housestaff who liaise closely with personal tutors. Problems are dealt with sensitively and pupils are given every support to settle in and study. The School does not have compulsory Exeat weekends but boarders are welcome to go home or to friends’ homes as arranged.

Wellington has a new Sport and Well-being department with the aim of educating pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle as well as to provide for the keenest and most able pupils. The School regularly has representatives on regional rugby, cricket, netball and hockey teams but also focuses on nutrition, fitness, psychology and activities such as judo, yoga, pilates and zumba. The School has an indoor swimming pool, an Astroturf, tennis and squash courts, a fencing salle and a large sports centre.

Wellington is passionate about fostering a love of music and along with regular performing opportunities over 50% of pupils receive instrumental tuition. Alongside several other concert and theatre spaces the Southside Centre offers small performance spaces for drama workshops designed to build confidence and self-awareness and promote teamwork. The Art & Design department has art, textiles and photography studios and design workshops with a 3D printer and a laser cutter.
