Overview

Box Hill is a friendly co-educational school for boarding and day students in Surrey, just 40 minutes from central London. The Good Schools Guide describes it as “a warm-hearted, encouraging school easily overlooked in favour of guarantees of undiluted top grades elsewhere.” Proud to be small with a holistic approach to education, academic achievement is at the core, but there is time to develop those aspects of a pupil’s character that set them apart from the crowd.

Program

Academic

At Sixth Form level there is a choice of either the IB Diploma or A Level and notably the average IB score continues to exceed the world average, with top students achieving 40+ points. Teaching, rated “Excellent” by the ISI, follows the intentions of the National Curriculum, but with broader scope to suit the abilities and interests of students. The range of courses on offer provides breadth and balance whilst study skill courses are provided annually in curricular time.

Boarding

There are more than 160 boarders in 6 houses, of which the majority are full boarders, ensuring that there is always a vibrant and busy atmosphere across all ages at evenings and weekends. Each house has a kitchen, satellite TV and wifi, whilst weekend activities include a Harry Potter club, archery and other competitions. There are residential houseparents and teaching staff, and a personal tutor is assigned to each pupil for both their academic and pastoral development.

Sports

Students have the opportunity to participate in a range of competitive sports; fixtures take place every Wednesday in the mainstream school sports, and whilst teams are selective, all students are encouraged to get involved. There is a good range of recreational sports on offer, including martial arts, archery, fencing, golf, sailing, climbing and tennis. Recent football tours have taken in the UAE and South Africa.

Creative arts

Creative Arts courses are available through to A Level/IB. Over 25% of pupils play at least one musical instrument and the Music school boasts a recording studio. There are at least 2 stage productions a year, recently including Singin’ in the Rain and Cabaret. These offer pupils opportunities as technical crew and musicians, as well as in acting. The annual Arts Festival includes music, an art exhibition and drama workshops, whilst the school choir has performed in Venice and Verona.
